Money Baby not enough

With the inspiration from entry I wrote about lesser babies with SG parents. and cinema screening the movie Money not Enough 2. as well as inspiration from a colleague, it triggers me to design the following poster, just for laugh.

Any resemblance of the event is solely coincidence.

59% of babies were born of Singaporean parents last year

According to channel newsasia, 59% of babies who were born in Singapore last year, has both parents who Singaporeans.

This is the summary of the article:

Statistic shows that 75% of the babies born in Singapore are fathered by Singaporean men while Singaporean women only accounted for 65% of them.

"If Singapore men are fathering more babies than Singapore women are giving birth to, then who is delivering the goods?"

It was reported that 6,071 babies who were born to Singapore fathers, has mothers who are either Malaysians, Indonesians, Chinese nationals, or are from other countries in the region.

According the article, "climbing the career ladder is one reason sociologists give for the low fertility rate among Singapore women, particularly among those with degrees."

An extract from the article, Associate Professor Angelique Chan, assistant head of Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore, said:

"A woman puts a lot of effort, time, overtime, into her work in her early 20s, mid—late 20s, then she gets to be about 30 years old and then she is thinking about marriage but it’s hard for her to find someone (at that age). The older you get, the more entrenched you get in your lifestyle....and it gets harder to adapt to another person."

And Singapore’s Total Fertility Rate, which measures the average number of children a woman will have in her lifetime is currently stands at 1.29.

My thoughts:
Quite sad huh?
When the fittest inthe world survive, yet they have to give up other things? Does being the best mean so much?
Why some cannot understand being simple and content with what you have can be happiness and blissful as well?
I guess, with better educations, people expects to lead a better life... ... but sometimes when we are busying chasing some things in life... we tends to miss out other more important things....

Well....

I guess.....

That's LIFE!

IF I were given a choice, I would want to marry early(before 30s) and to give birth early too...

McClelland's theory of needs

McClelland's theory of needs states that people vary in the type of needs they have. Their motivation and how well they perform in a work situation are related to whether they have a need for:

• Achievement
• Afflilation OR
• Power

Achievement needs:

• attaining challenging goals
• setting new records
• successful completion of difficult tasks
• doing something not done before
• Prefers:
• work that has moderate possibilities of success
• frequent and specific feeback about performance
• work alone or with other high achievers

Affilation needs:

• behaviours towards others that are cooperative, supportive, and frienndly and which value belonging and conformity to the group
• great satisfaction from being liked and accepted by others
• Perfer:
• work with others who prefer group harmony and cohesion

Power needs:

• influencing others, defeating an opponent or competitor, winning an argument or attaining a position of greater authority
• Perfer:
• work which has supervision/leadership

Time for reflections:

I think I am one who has all the 3 needs!!! =X

I think I am one with moderate to high achievement needs. For I like to challenge myself to achieve goals with moderate possibilities of success, set new records, doing something not done before AND I require constant feedbacks about my own performance (do you all think so ??? ) I will feel uneasy if there is no feedback regarding my performance....

I think I am one with moderate to high affilation needs. For I value belonging to a particular group. And I attained great satistaction from being liked and accepted by others. AND I hate POLITICS.

I think I am one with moderate to high power needs too.... for I like to influence people..... challenge myself to defeat my competitor or to win an argument AND I like leadership roles.

So.....

I have to adjust myself at different situations... to see whether I have more achievement, affilation or power needs......

But since I am a more FEELING person.... I think I would have more affilation needs... =)

Is work a blessing or curse?

Today, we had our sociology of work module.....
hmm... as usual, it was erm.... boring.... and the slides were wordy....

Thus, I doze off for awhile.....

Anyway, we had tutorial after that 2 hrs of lecture (luckily with 1 hr break before the tutorial).

Guess what? The class suppose to do a debate during that 50 mins of tutorial with 10 mins of discussions and then get 10 ppl out to debate.

Well, we were against the idea of debating as only 10 ppl can participate and we told suggest that we wanted to have open discussions where all of us just throw in our thoughts. He seems to give in to us, or rather, he cannot "control" us. I was wondering, are we that rebellious? Haha...

The following are the points we came out with regarding work as a:

Blessing:

• can get $$$$
• meaningful and purposeful
• cognitive stimulation
• drives the economy
• expand social circle
• increases self- esteem
• empowerment
• provides a direction in one's life
• get "something" in return
• self discovery
• contribute back to society
• a form of respite
• "leisure"

Curse

• tiring
• no time for family
• work may not be meaningful
• have to work hard to meet departmental target/expectations
• stress --> depression
• decrease social circle (no time for friends)
• no time to exercise
• mis-guide a person's life
• low participants in leisure activities
• cannot bring money to grave (thus why work?)
• back stabbing to maintain status
• too economic
• too competitive
• occupational hazards
• gender biasness
• decrease quality time with family
• bias towards ppl with disbility

Were the above familar with you guys?

Hmmm... well, whether work is a blessing or a curse depends on the following:

• social status
• gender
• culture
• nature of job

The above are all from today's lectures and tutorial.

My thoughts:

Well, the most important thing is to define what is work. If you think work is just a job and something that you do for money only, then you may not enjoy it.

On the other hand, if you think that you work not just for money but to find meaning in life and self discovery. Then it is more than just an occupation. (an occupation is something that keeps a person occupied)

Thus, if any of you are frustrated at work. Stop to think, why do you choose this job/work at the first place? For the salary that you are drawing? Or for the interest? Or because it gives you a meaning in life? Helps you to find what you are finding in life?

You cannot change what you do at work (or maybe you can) but you can change the way you view them. There are always 2 sides to a coin.

"Life is like a rollar coaster. There are times when it is up and times when it is down. You can dread about the journey or enjoy every moment of it. The choice is yours."
